Little Book for Anxiety is a succinct but a wonderful and useful book by James Quigley. The author has given a very convincing root cause of anxiety, i.e. some incident in one’s personal life, most probably during one’s childhood where the issue was not resolved correctly or during one’s adult life. In both cases a personal loss incurred to the individual or some other loved ones. The anxiety rises as a thought and using the thinking process of the inflicted person as the conveyer belt; it overpowers and sometimes paralyzes the person because it creates the movie of the worst outcome scenario in the head of the individual.
The author has given some very age old proven to work remedies which are not prescription drug but changing mindset. One of them is counting the beads while the other one is listening to or singing lyrics which engage the mind positively and can take over the space that anxiety fills in their absence. Prayer beads and singing prayers aloud in many religions have been serving this purpose for centuries. The counter-productive measures that people usually take, such as drinking or smoking, only delay the occurrence of the anxiety and hence are ineffective in long run.
Of course the self-help books are useful when there is ample social connection and empathy from friends and families. This has not been stressed by the author.
The author has not also mentioned about the chemical imbalance in the brain which can lead to or aggravate anxiety. Most neurotransmitters can cause anxiety or anxiety like symptoms. But at the same time recurring anxiety can also develop chemical imbalances. Therefore a combination of medicinal and psychological approach could be the best for the elimination of anxiety in most cases.
