Chase Chandler, a contract agent for the FBI, posing as an international corporate executive, is on assignment in Mexico to retrieve a murderer hiding out under the protection of a Mexican drug lord. At the same time as Chase and Lorena are trying to put their lives back together, Diego Sanchez, an international fencing champion, is returning home to Mexico after a twenty-year absence only to discover his affair at the age of nineteen produced an illegitimate son. Always haunted by his past, Diego begins a quest to find his son that takes him down the darkest passageways of deception and treachery. During his search for answers, Diego encounters Lorena, who is estranged from Chase after he breaks his promise to never go out on another mission. Tormented by the question of her future with Chase, Lorena turns to Diego. The resulting conflict encircling this triad is fraught with suspicion and betrayal - leaving no one untouched by the steadfast grip of uncertainty.

Just Beyond the Edge is the kind of book that will completely hold your interest and urge you not to put it down. Hager's principal characters come alive and the intersections of their lives has all the excitement, drama, passion, and intrigue that you'd want. For those fortunate enough to live in the Mexican region where the novel is set you will delightfully relate to the places and culture. If you read to fall asleep, don't choose this book!
I don't often go for the page turners, but this book has it all, action, romance and the allure of Mexico all wrapped up in one. Hard to put it down, whether in a hammock or just the sofa, Mr. Hager keeps the story moving through suspenseful scenes and tight plot lines. I think I fell a little in love with the protagonist too. I will look for more by this author.
Michael Hager's Just Beyond the Edge is a great, refreshing read. Unexpected twists and turns craft a suspenseful tale of intrigue and romance that take us across the border of Texas and deep into the heart of Mexico. Having lived my life in both places I found the characters to be authentic, their drama compelling, and I delighted at the opportunity of being transported into the rarified worlds of Flamenco, Fencing and Undercover action. Time very well spent!
Just Beyond the Edge was an engaging and gripping novel right from the start. I found myself immersed in the character's lives as the story unfolded and I really enjoyed the way Hager developed these complex, yet very human characters. There's suspense, betrayal, love, forgiveness and redemption all woven together to create a stellar story. Do not miss reading this novel. I couldn't put it down and really felt like I was taken to the edge emotionally along with the characters. If you like a read that's honest and exciting, then Just Beyond the Edge is for you.

From the first chapter, Hager painted evocative, colorful settings and strong, familiar characters which drew me in and kept me involved through decades of intrigue, romance, and adventure . . . constantly confounded as my astute conclusions were dashed by yet another brilliant turn of events. His characters are plausibly dressed with comprehensive cultural nuance and embody rich, complex lore and traditions of old-school spying, fencing, and flamenco that gave me more than a glimpse into each protagonist's sole, and piqued further interest. The romantic interludes are delicious. From one who does not easily get hooked, this book kept me intrigued until the last, very satisfying page. What's next, Hager?
From the very begining, this book grabs the attention with a character we don't often have contact with on any level. The reader is placed on the inside with an American acting as a contract worker with the FBI- in Mexico. As a Law Enforcement officer working in Texas over 20 years, I found this read realistic and interesting without over doing it. It brings together different cultures, different people, and finally a different, unexpected, ending. This novel is deep into the grayer side of Drug Enforcement while building a love story with equal depth. First novel? I can only ask, next?
